Improv classes are for anyone: people who want to perform, people who want to be better at thinking on their feet, and people who just want to meet others and laugh. You do not need any acting experience.
What a beginner class is like
A Level 1 class usually meets once a week for six to eight weeks. Each class is a mix of warm-up games and short scenes in pairs or small groups. Many programs end with a graduation show for friends and family.
Try it first
- Drop-in classes let you try one class without signing up for a course.
- Jams are open sessions where anyone can sign up to play. Watching one is a great way to see what classes are like.
- Workshops are single sessions, often a few hours, on one skill or style.
Choosing a class
- Pick a time you can make every week. Missing classes is the main reason people do not finish.
- Ask how many levels the program has and whether students get to perform.
- Check the age range. Most classes are for adults, and some theaters run separate teen or kids programs.
