Your First Improv Show: What to Expect

Improv is comedy made up on the spot. There is no script: the performers build scenes, characters and sometimes whole musicals from suggestions the audience shouts out. Here is what a first visit is like.

Short-form or long-form?

  • Short-form shows are a series of quick games, like the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway. They are fast, high-energy and easy for first-timers.
  • Long-form shows build one longer, connected piece from a single suggestion, often 20 to 40 minutes. They tend to be more story-driven.
  • Musical improv makes up songs, or an entire musical, on the spot with a live accompanist.

Will I have to go on stage?

Almost never. Most of the time the audience only shouts out suggestions. Some shows invite a volunteer on stage, and it is always optional.

Is it family friendly?

It depends on the show. Many shows are all-ages, while late-night shows are often 18+ or 21+. Use the Audience filter on the search page, and check the listing before you buy tickets.

Tips

  • Arrive 15 minutes early. Many smaller theaters have open seating.
  • Have a suggestion ready. Everyday words like a place, a job or a household object work best.
  • Buy tickets ahead for Friday and Saturday shows. Smaller rooms sell out.
